Important Faculty Club Members Meeting
4-5 pm, Thursday, June 22

We are at an important turning point for the Faculty Center.
Come hear about some new developments and updates.
The Board of Governors wants your input!

Remember: We are a member-run organization, the only one on campus; and we need everyone’s participation.

We also need every member’s support – through using the Center for your events and meals, encouraging your departments/units to join as departmental members and hold their events at the Faculty Center, and contributing financially to one of our tax-deductible funds (click here to donate: https://giving.ucla.edu/Standard/NetDonate.aspx?SiteNum=461).

Most importantly, I look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Distinguished Professor, Department of Psychology
Emeriti Association Donation Matching
As many of you are aware, the Emeriti Association has taken the mantle of two of the three founding groups of the UCLA Faculty Center. As you also know, the Faculty Center is in need of repair and cannot generate enough funds from operations to finance the needed capital improvements and redecoration of the interior.
The EA board recently continued our tradition as a strong Faculty Center supporter by authorizing a one– for-one matching  fund. All emeriti donations to the center between  March 1 and June 30, 2017, will be matched. The matching fund is capped at $12,000.

Those who qualify for Emeriti Association membership, whether or not they are current members, are eligible to participate. This includes surviving spouses, librarians, those who have had emeritus status conferred, and honorary members (those who have reached the age of 85).
The matching fund was motivated by an appreciation of the role the Faculty Center plays in hosting many Emeriti Association activities as well as in individual lives of emeriti.

The Faculty Center has two UCLA Foundation tax-deductible funds:
*The UCLA Faculty Center Fund provides important operational support to the faculty center; it is used to discharge financial obligations to the university for essential services provided by the Faculty Center
*The Faculty Center Modernization Fund makes possible repairs and renovations both minor and major in kitchens, rooms, patios and gardens.

Donations to either fund can be made by going to this link:
https://www.giving.ucla.edu/standard/NetDonate.aspx?SiteNum=461

Or from the Faculty Center website (https://www.facultycenter.ucla.edu), find the Donate link at the top of the page and follow instructions.

[On the UCLA Foundation page], there is a comments section where you can note that your donation is eligible for the Emeriti Association match [there is also a check box to indicate your emeriti status].

If you prefer to donate by check, please take or send your check, made payable to the UCLA Foundation, to the Faculty Center, 480 Charles E Young Drive East, Los Angeles, CA 90095. In the memo section, please write Faculty Center Fund or Faculty Center Modernization Fund.

All New Conference Facilities

Dear Members,

I am very pleased to share this update on the Faculty Center's new, improved conference facilities and support services:

1. We have new AV throughout the Faculty Center; this includes new sound systems and new projection equipment.

2. We have remodeled the South Wing. Both large rooms in the South Wing now have blackout curtains for ideal visual projection conditions. The décor has been modified to harmonize with the Faculty Center's midcentury modern architecture.

3. If you host a conference elsewhere on campus, attendees can still have lunch at the Faculty Center; and you need not rent a private room. This can occur in one of two ways depending on your budget:
     a. Conference organizers can purchase lunch tickets in advance and distribute them to all attendees. Attendees may go through the buffet line and eat in the Main Dining Room or on any of the outdoor patios.
     b. If your conference does not have a budget for lunch, CONFERENCE ATTENDEES CAN SHOW THEIR BADGE AND PURCHASE THEIR OWN LUNCH. They simply stop by the front desk to pay via credit card, then go through the buffet line and eat in the Main Dining Room or on the beautiful Rose Garden patio.

We hope that you will avail yourself of these new possibilities at the Faculty Center when planning a small or medium-sized conference!

Best wishes,
Patricia Greenfield
President, Faculty Center Board of Governors
Distinguished Professor, Department of Psychology

Mother's Day Brunch Review

Did you make it out to Mother’s Day Brunch? It was a beautiful event, with delicious new  buffet options. The crowd favorites included the all new DIY Bellini bar and the Belgian waffles with the works! The piano player was also extremely popular, interacting with guests and entertaining everyone.
“The best buffet I’d ever had was in New Zealand, until I came here. This is now the best buffet I’ve ever had!”
“Our family loved the Belgian waffles! We hadn’t seen them at [the Faculty Center’s] buffets before, and they were just great!”

What You’ll Need

  • kosher salt
  • 16-18 oz. cheese ravioli
  • 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 5 oz. baby spinach
  • 1/4 c. chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 c. freshly grated Parmesan

The Faculty Center is no stranger to a delicious ravioli. We serve them in a variety of flavors with delicious sauces several days out of the week (this writer’s personal favorite is the butternut squash with beurre noisette and crispy sage).  This recipe combines some of the Faculty Center’s favorite flavors with one of our favorite dishes! Perfect for a warm summer afternoon.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Bring 12" sauté pan of water to a boil and generously season with salt. Prepare a rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper. Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. Remove ravioli using a slotted spoon and place in a single layer on the sheet pan, then discard water.
2. Place the pan over medium heat. Add oil, butter, and garlic; sauté until butter begins to bubble, about 1 minute. Add red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper; stir with a rubber spatula. Add half the ravioli and stir gently until well coated; immediately add balance of ravioli and repeat. Flip the ravioli gently as needed to prevent them from sticking. Cook ravioli until golden brown, about 5 minutes.
Toss in spinach gently, then garnish with parsley and Parmesan. Serve immediately.
