Faculty Center Building Update

We have been actively working on an ambitious project to improve the Faculty Center building thanks to considerable planning by Faculty Center leadership, the Design Committee of the Board of Governors, and the Board of Governors as a whole. We look forward to reopening the Center in fall 2021.

UCLA Administration has pledged $10 million for a seismic and infrastructure project for our beloved mid-century modern structure. The renderings were prepared by MRY Architects and Planners. This firm is working with Capital Programs and the Faculty Center on the seismic and infrastructure upgrade that is being funded by UCLA Administration. The plan includes images from architects specialized in mid-century modern design, followed by floorplans and recommended surfaces and colors.

In addition, improvements to the interior of the building will be carried out with funds from our donors, including a $1 million contribution from Sherie and Don Morrison. Please click the link at the bottom to see work in progress. See below for renderings and images of these projects.

South Restrooms

Because of critical work to improve the sewer lines from the kitchen, the restrooms in the south wing will be renovated. (Renderings by  MRY Architects & Planners)

California Room

The California Room will be renovated and transformed through the gracious donation by Sherie and Don Morrison. The room will be renamed the Morrison Room in their honor. This room is the centerpiece for many events and conferences and will be a stellar example of mid-century design. New carpet will be installed, the ceiling will be brightened with new paint, and the walls stripped of their molding to return it to its classic mid-century style. East Patio/California Terrace

One of the most attractive features of mid-century modern architecture is the “indoor-outdoor” aesthetic that capitalizes on Southern California weather and addresses current public health demands. Therefore, by design all Faculty Center meeting rooms have adjoining outdoor space. Beautification plans include increasing the harmony and flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, and enhancing all patios and terraces with improved hardscaping, irrigation and new plantings. Water saving goals include more efficient landscape design and irrigation systems, and greater use of drought resistant plants. (Renderings by MRY Architects & Planners)
